What might be causing my engine/ignition fuse to keep blowing out.?

It's a 1984 Holden/Isuzu 2 wheel drive 1600 cc engine. The 15amp engine fuse blows out every 4 to 6 months. The plastic around the fuse itself partially melts.

Hard to understand why the plastic is melting. Can mean the fuse is running hot. Could be caused by a failing ignition module. Since the fuse isn't just burning out as it should then it's likely not a short or bad ground, rather, the ignition system is drawing upwards of 15 amps. Close enough to run it hot but not enough to blow it out until it is fatigued and fails.

Get a Childress or Haynes manual and investigate what voltages and resistances you should be seeing on the ignition circuit. Older cars had a ballast resister that held current down so as to not burn out the coil (before ignition modules) Newer (but still old) cars had resistive wires that held current down. Maybe someone replaced the wire with a regular wire and now the system is drawing too much current. There can be a number of answers as to why. You'll just need to troubleshoot the problem.

    Hope this helps.

  • with out knowing what circuit that fuse is part of, its a wild guess. every 4-6 months is another odd detail though.
