What can a woman do in this situation?

A woman says she was raped. She went to the police and they won't do anything because she can't afford to pursue it. I just can't believe that this is the reason they won't go after the guy, meaning I don't believe her story. Aren't there public prosecutors like there are public defenders that represent people who could not afford an attorney? How does this work? I'm completely ignorant?

Update:

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought, but I've never needed a prosecutor and I'm trying to help someone who is spiraling out of control. Legal issues are not my area of expertise.

All prosecutors in the US are public. They are paid by the state. It would be illegal for them to accept money from a victim.

This woman is either delusional, or a pathological liar. Either way, stay far away.

EDIT: You're a kind soul, but you seriously cannot help. This person *needs* doctors. Convincing her of that would be helpful, but please realize it's highly unlikely. Best wishes.

    It's bogus.

The police and the district attorneys don't ask for money to investigate or prosecute a crime.

They DO ask for evidence though, and apparently this woman didn't have much of that.
