What are the ramifications of the lung tumor pushing on the pulmonary artery?

I can't be at the Doctor appointment with my dad, he has Stage IV lung Cancer. He has had a LOT of trouble breathing lately and when they did a CT the PA said it looked like the main tumor mass was pushing against the pulmonary artery...

But what does that mean? Has anyone been through this? My mom and dad tend to hide bad news from me...even though I am 35, so I just wanted someone elses take what this MIGHT mean. I know you are obscure people on the internet, but has anyone been through this, what was the outcome?

Update:

He was diagnosed 11 months ago. I am aware that there is no affective treatment....I just wanted to know what this NEW thing meant. Cancer is a juggling act, we are trying to keep him as comfortable as possible until the end.

The tumor will inhibit blood flow to the lungs, and this causes excess pressure to build on the right side of the heart. Right-sided heart congestion causes fluids to build up in the abdomen, along with shortness of breath, possible chest pains and coughing, and at some point, might cause liver problems. People usually get easily winded with physical activity, but the effect depends on the severity of the problem. Its not a particularly painful condition, but bloating can be uncomfortable. A lot of the symptoms are manageable with oxygen supplementation and diuretics to reduce the fluids.

Stage IV Lung Cancer is "Terminal" so be aware of that. The Pulmonary Artery (Left AND Right) brings blood from the heart via the Pulmonary Trunk connected to the Right Ventricle. The Tumor pushes in (let say the Left one) will reduce blood to the Left Lung. That does not create much problem.

Is your Dad losing weight fast? If yes, he will last only 3 months!! Make sure he has a WILL. Bless you and your family.

The pulmonary artery carriers deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. Then the blood is oxygenated and brought back to the heart via the pulmonary vein. If the mass was pushing against the pulmonary artery it would cause the heart to work harder which would explain your dads trouble breathing.

I work as a critical care paramedic and im sorry to hear about your dad. But his heart is going to be under an extreme amount of stress and giving his situation he might not be able to compensate for that like you or I would. I would try to spend as much time as I could with him and enjoy each others company.
