I have a leak between the water tank and the toilet? Is it easy to remove the tank and is it a washer issue?

It is an old toilet, will the nut that holds the tank on be rusted and hard to remove? The water is leaking at the back of the toilet between the water tank and toilet head.

It will be an easy job once you get those nuts off of the bolts. It's just a washer as you said. If WD-40 doesn't loosen the nuts, hit them with a hammer a few dozen times. That might loosen the rust. If that doesn't work, the job becomes harder but you don't need to replace the whole toilet. You can saw off the nuts with a reciprocating saw and a hacksaw blade. If you don't have one, here's the plan. If you can't get the nuts loose, find a handyman in the pennysaver or similar newspaper or on the internet. Call and ask if that person has a reciprocating saw with a hacksaw blade. Keep calling until you find one who has the right tool. Then describe the problem and he will tell you he will do the job. The cost should be $10 to $25.

    Hi Beachloveric,

Try using penetrating oil such as Liquid Wrench or WD40 on the bolt. If this does not work, take a hacksaw blade; tape up one end with duct tape to protect your hand.

Slip the blade in between the tank and bowel and cut through the bolt to remove the tank. If the bolt is rusty you should be able to cut through it fairly easily.

Once you have cut through the bolt, remove the tank and take the old gasket to your local Home Depot. The plumbing associates will assist you in purchasing the replacement gasket and bolt set.

I hope this answers your question

it's a rubber gasket that the water tank sits on connected to the toilet (obviously a two piece toilet or else the leak will be coming from a crack)

Take the interior plumbing out of the water tank and once you remove the nuts holding it in place, you can replace the gasket.

It shouldn't be toohard to get those tank bolts off. You'll have to get new bolts & washers to replace those. When you get a replacement washer donut that seats between the tank and the bowl, make sure you get the right one because there are numerous types.

WD-40 should work on the nuts to loosen them, if it doesn't, then you'll be purchacing a new commode. Obviously a "leak" is a "water issue".

put WD 40 on the nut and let it set overnight than do it again
