What benefits are there to spreading Christianity?
You hear about the constant spread of Christianity throughout history, but what really is the benefit to it's followers or the religion itself?

Social cohesion. when people share something in common, especially religion, it binds them into a larger community. Of course, religions also tend to evolve, and break into varying sects, denominations, and eventually new religions of their own, so the benefit is lost. Just think, spreading christianity today involves spreading Mormonismism, catholicism ,Protestantism, Jehovah'sh's witnesses, and other variants, many of which are ncompatibleble. In such case other ways of binding people are needed, i.e. belief in democracy and the right to practice one's own religion.
