Why do Christians say that Jesus changed all the Old Testament laws?

I.e. that we don't have to follow them anymore when Jesus clearly said:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

(Matthew 5:17-18)

Therefore, since the earth is still here, then all the Old Testament laws should still be in force. So why don't Christians automatically try to stone disobedient children to death and so on?

Because he also declared himself a new covenant. the Law of the Prophets is not the Law of Leviticus, which is details all those old murderous Hebrew laws. Second, we understand the time and place has changed. Third, scholars don't really think all the ancient Hebrew laws are the word of God, more likely Moses did what leaders have done for millenia, told the people that the laws of men were the word of God. He probably did so with a good heart, but that just made it a more profound decree

True, Jesus did say: “Do not think I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I came, not to destroy, but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) But what does the expression “to fulfill” mean? To illustrate: A builder fulfills a contract to complete a building, not by ripping up the contract, but by finishing the structure. However, once the work has been completed to the client’s satisfaction, the contract is fulfilled and the builder is no longer under obligation to it. Likewise, Jesus did not break, or rip up, the Law; rather, he fulfilled it by keeping it perfectly. Once fulfilled, that Law “contract” was no longer binding on God’s people.

Since Christ fulfilled the Law, are Christians obligated to keep the weekly Sabbath? Under inspiration, the apostle Paul answers: “Therefore let no man judge you in eating and drinking or in respect of a festival or of an observance of the new moon or of a sabbath; for those things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ.”—Colossians 2:16, 17.

Those inspired words suggest quite a change in God’s requirements for his servants. Why the change? Because Christians are under a new law, “the law of the Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) The former Law covenant given through Moses to Israel came to an end when Jesus’ death fulfilled it. (Romans 10:4; Ephesians 2:15) Did the commandment about keeping the Sabbath also come to an end? Yes. After saying that “we have been discharged from the Law,” Paul went on to refer to one of the Ten Commandments. (Romans 7:6, 7) So the Ten Commandments—including the Sabbath law—are part of the Law that came to an end. God’s worshippers, therefore, are no longer required to observe a weekly Sabbath.

It is true that parts of old testment christians do not practice becuase it is no longer necessary. When Jesus died on the cross, he put a stop to sacerfisess becuase he was the ultmate sacerfise, We still have to obey the 10 commandmentsnand the laws. yes, in terms of sin the old testment still applies to today and God did not change that. We just live in grace.

Infact, to anyone who does give his or live will be judged by the law and will be found guilty. No one.

Only, a true christian will be found not gulity because of Jesus death on the cross

    Hebrews 8:6-13

    King James Version (KJV)

6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Jesus did not change the Old Testament laws, but Paul wrote at Galatians 3:19 - "Why then the Law? It was added to make transgressions manifest, until the seed (Jesus) should arrive to whom the promise had been made,.......vs. 24 & 25 - "Consequently the Law has become our tutor leading to Christ, that we might be declared righteous due to faith. But now that the faith has arrived, we are no longer under a tutor." The law the Israelites were given was perfect, yet like a tutor it led them to follow principles and guidelines given by God, however, once Jesus sacrificed his life for us, now our exercising faith in Jesus Christ allows us to gain God's favor.

Christians who read the old testament are a little worried by all the blood spilled in the name of God and the innumerable laws from taking your your brothers widow as a wife to burning any who work on the Sabbath. The law as written in the OT would do the Taliban proud.

    At http://tyndalearchive.com/scriptures/www.innvista....

an apologist states the destroy means misinterpret and fulfil means to correctly "interpret".

The answer is in the scripture you quoted. Jesus fulfilled the law. He also came to change the covenants from law to grace.

@cupcake: You are in denial as to spiritual truth in scripture. I know you are an SDA, and your denomination is founded on keeping the Sabbath. Scripture shows clearly that God is with us 24/7, and we rest in Him 24/7. The day we choose to worship corporately can be any one of the 7. Scripture does say not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together.

Can you understand the difference between Old and New???

New makes Old obsolete. Hebrews 8:13 Pretty simple.
