Political correctness, affirmative action, multiculturalism, and other nonsense that kids are taught instead of real academics as before.

Personally, I believe that the quality of American education remains an open question. It is true that there are certain measures of proficiency in mathmatics or science for example, where Asian or European students are said to rank higher in certain test scores.

However, the success and or "failure" of American education has become a politically charged and highly contentious political issue.

In America today ultra-conservative and right-wing political leaders are constantly trying to undermine public confidence in the educational system. This seems to stem from a number of causes.

    1. The American right-wing hates public school teachers and especially public teacher unions which they despirately seek to destroy.

    2. Some right-wing extremists in America question public education altogether as an example of government-control in the lives of citizens

    3. Candidates of the political right in American receive funding from corporations and corporate officers who are affiliated with for-profit education companies who seek to replace public schools with corporate-run, for-profit schools.

    4. Right-wing religious extremists claim that public education is some sort of government-sponsored effort at "liberal indoctrination" and think that kids should be educated by parents at home or at church-affiliated schools. In addition, some of these religious leaders just happen to publish and sell textbooks and curriculum geared toward church-affiliated schools and "Home-schools" and want to make money selling their material.

Personally, I believe American schools are as good as schools anywhere in the world but these sorts of politically motivated arguments help to undermine the confidence of Americans in the quality of public education.

you mean besides the poor standards resulting in things like the wording of your question? There are quite a few, smaller class sizes, more attention to students that need it, the smarter kids aren't held back on learning new things simply cause the majority don't grasp basic concepts, teachers are required to be better educated, they don't have standardized tests like we do, competition for academic achievements isn't an issue, students are given adequate meals and adequate exercise, current books on subjects being studied, the list goes on and on. Europe treats their educational budget like we do our military budget.
