The diet of a basset hound puppy?

My girlfriend and I don't agree on the kind of feeding for our female basset puppy (named "Darla"). She read somewhere that they're prone to obesity (and I agree on that one) so therefore the puppy must be on controlled feeding. On the other hand, I think that it still a growing puppy so I say "let her eat as much as she wants then control her diet as she gets bigger". Of course, she had to be restrained from any activity right after eating to prevent bloating. The pup is about eight weeks old, by the way. My girlfriend may be wrong or I may be wrong. Care to enlighten us, please.

Feed the recommended amount of food per day. It's a puppy so will be going to the vet for shots soon, ask the vet about the weight. and adjust accordingly. Over feeding as a puppy makes it hard on the adult dog to adjust to the limited food. Feed enough but don't over feed as a puppy.

Unrestricted feeding of a dog is never a good idea, even for a puppy. A dog will eat till the food is gone in many cases. When you buy puppy food, it will have instructions for feeding based on the age of the puppy and it's weight or breed. The premium dog foods actually have more calories than the cheaper store brands, so it may be a good idea to feed the dog slightly less than the bag indicates. I personally would speak with your veterinarian for their recommendations.

  • If you used a responsible Basset Hound breeder who shows/works his dogs, then you contact him and ask what he's found to work best.

If you stupidly used a backyard breeder, then you are out of luck and should start preparing for hefty medical and training bills.

I am not a free-feed fan. Depending on the size of the puppy, feeding 3-5 times a day is fine.

Bloat has not been proven to be caused by activity before or after eating. In fact, the few studies done on bloat show that activity has nothing to do with it. Overfeeding in one sitting DOES contribute to it, as can watering down food with citric acid in it.

Usually the person to ask would be the breeder of this puppy. If that person is unavailable I would discuss it with my vet and try to find a breeder in your area who may be willing to give you some feeding tips. In my opinion I would not overfeed her nor would I put her on a strict controlled diet.

I would be feeding high quality, yes expensive, dog food, primarily dry kibble. While she is growing nutrition is important for strong bones, healthy immune system etc. After she is a mature adult

then I would watch her weight carefully.

STOP switching his food. Dogs... can't handle it. We use Costco lamb formula... Blue, and natural balance cost $50. Costco only $22 for like 35 lbs. It is also VERY highly rated... in fact higher than blue and natural. I know this because we used the same brands b4 costco. another trick I learned is pure pumpkin. NOT the pumpkin pie mix... but rather PURE pumpkin. They sell it at your local grocery store in a can... just make sure NOT to buy the pumpkin pie mix. The Label must say 100% pure pumpkin. Mix one big spoon full every meal. You'll notice the difference in about 2-3 days.
