Best self defense weapon?

I'm a 21-year-old female Student. I'm taking some classes at night and also volunteer until late some evenings. Sexual assaults are pretty common in my area, and I'm interested in carrying a weapon such as pepper spray or a small baton for self defense ONLY.

Any recommendations or pros and cons? I want something I'm not very likely to hurt myself with and that will be non lethal, so probably no knives.

Update:

I am a tall woman and am fairly able to protect myself. However, I was nearly strangled before breaking my attackers nose In high school and would prefer to avoid close-contact defense. I always follow best safety practices as well.

Update 2:

I agree that safety, being wary, etc are important, but I was attacked at 2 pm on a crowded high school campus. I would argue that precautions are not ALWAYS sufficient.

There is no such thing as non lethal. You can throw water on a attacker and they might have a heart attack or slip and take a deadly fall.

Best defense is to walk like you belong where you are and to be aware of you surroundings. Except for drunks bad guys can tell subconsciously by your body language if you are a potential victim or not.

Secondary would be pepper (OC) spray. To really be useful you have to understand how it works and actually practice. The better brands marketed for police sell exact copies of their cans filled with water for practice. IN the movies and on TV the bad guy is always sprayed when they can get both faces in the camera shot.

You as a real victim do not wist that long. You spray a potential attacker in the face area when they are at least 5 feet away. That way the pepper gas has a better chance of working to blind and disorient the bad guy.

Then you run away screaming yous have to practice screaming also most really cannot do it) into a crowded area. In my city I always suggest you run into the street where you can be seen by others.

Pepper spray runs $5 to 10. I suggest you get the stream kind not the fog or cone kind.

Stun guns are useless. They do not work like int the movies, People do not fall down helpless from stun guns. You have to let the bad guy get to close to use the stun gun. The stun just causes some pain and the part of the body stunned to pull away, like touching a hot stove.

A real civilian Taser brand system is OK but they cost well over $100. Made to use form 10 to 15 feet away, then you drop it while it still is producing the electric shock automatically (for 8 seconds) and run away. Taser will send a new one free if you have a police report.

If you are small it would be easy for someone to take your baton away from you. A baton would also be more difficult for you to transport. Pepper spray would be the best. Many pepper sprays come with a dye so when you spray someone their face is stained for a couple of days making it easier for law enforcement to find them. Pepper spray is also easier to carry with you.

Take a self defense class. There are many women only self defense classes out there.

Carry something that makes noise, like a whistle.

Prevention is often the key. If you are nervous, call someone. Tell them where you are. If something happens to you, they can call 911 since they know where you are. If someone is following you call someone and describe the person. Often times if a thug hears you on the phone describing him and telling someone your location it will scare them off. Carry a backup phone. ANY cell phone can call 911, whether it has service or not. Hide an old small phone on your person. If you are mugged and someone takes your phone, you can use your backup phone to call for help. Be aware of your surroundings. Find the safest route to walk home. Look for lighted areas where there will be people within earshot. Even if the walk home is a little longer, a safer route would be better. And walk with a friend if you can. Safety in numbers. Lots of info in the link.

Keeping your cool. Before using the blade, bullet, bat, etc. consider what ya have going on. If a group of people or somebody were to jump you chances are you could've avoided the situation all together. Not saying to be a passifist but if you see suspicious activity ahead, take a different route if you can. Remember no matter what weapon you have on hand or combat you know, there's risk that the enemy will get the upperhand and may cost you your life, plus if you get the upperhand there are some dishonest lawyers that are great at twisting the facts making you look like an angry terrorist on drugs. Overall, any weapon should do but the best is to be peacable and avoid if possible.

If it comes to that that you need to use self defense weapon you've already screwed up. Best self defense weapon is between your ears. Recognize places where you can become a victim (think like an attacker for one week and think where would you attack/rob other people) observe people's behaviour (if something is out of ordinary, body language) etc. If you do all that right you wont need a self defense weapon. Don't forget - crime is a process it doesn't come out of nowhere even if it looks like that.

Besides even if you have a weapon what make you think that you're gonna use it under adrenaline, especially if you are not trained. Maybe it sounds harsh but many people look for best self defense martial art or best self defense weapon where all you need to do is use your brain and common sense. Good luck.
