Would a Biology degree help me become a paramedic?

I am seriously considering going EMT-B then Paramedic route after I get my BA in Biology at University of Texas - Austin in 2 years.

Would I be able to get credit for a lot of classes in EMT-B and later Paramedic courses? Because I have taken or is taking quite a few A&P classes. Of course if I have to take IV courses or other A&P courses later on, it'll be good reinforcement.

The one thing I'm curious about is whether or not a bio degree will give me an edge over other EMT's without one when applying for jobs? Thank you.

You do not need a degree to become a Paramedic. EMT and Paramedics are both tech certs. The credits for each are difficult to transfer to other colleges.

If you want to be a Paramedic, just get the EMT cert which can be done in 3 weeks and apply for the Paramedic cert which can take anywhere from 4 - 9 months depending on how many days per week you go to school It is only 600 - 1200 clock hours total.

A degree might even hinder you from getting a job as an EMT or Paramedic unless you want to become a firefighter. Only 20% of all Paramedics have any type of degree and they are usually firefighters. Some of that 20% are also counted for those who also hold nursing degrees.

So don't waste time on a Biology degree or even an EMS degree.

To be a paramedic the bio undergrad degree way nothing. Most universities have paramedic packages that take approx 1 12 months. They're in organization with the med schools however are like a speedy abridged version ucla and usc both have applications to turn out to be a paramedic.

do yourself a favor - if you are getting a degree and want to go into EMS and do not want to go to an EMS management program somewhere, get a degree in Nursing -- most of the courses should be applicable -- they have even had an RN to P program for a while at some colleges.

Having a degree in biology could help a lot, but I hope that you are not wasting your money / time.

It may not help - you may be overqualified and/or seen as a threat to someone's job.
