It's most likely due to them starting because of a stressful situation. At the time it was a comforting action, but now it's just a reaction to boredom, nervousness, etc. A huge problem with nail biting is that they're always so readily available. Unlike other habits which aren't always at your fingertips.

I chew mine when I'm stressed or especially when I'm anxious. Also, nerves can do it. If I catch myself when I'm doing it I try to stop. Try to be conscious of it all the time.
