Who makes the best heat sink? I have am i7-920?

This is for my Intel i7-920 on an Asus P6T motherboard. The original was a fan/heat sink that came with the i7 from Intel but I haven't been able to find one at a local store (Frys, Curcuit City, etc... I hope to get an answer from someone who knows this stuff. I will award the 10 points for a good answer.

usually the stocks tend to be pretty bad but intel does better usually

youd be pretty hard beat finding the 1366 socket which is what you need every processor

has a diffrent socket type due to mounting etc

there are several sockets yours being the 1336

here is some options regardless of size of case these are all pretty low in height unlike the big coolers

    this is a universal cooler

    http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-GeminII-M4-RR-...

not univeral but smaller just right for your 1366

    http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Vortex-Plus-RR...

a decent and usually good cpu cooler

    http://www.amazon.com/Scythe-Shuriken-Rev-B-SCSK-1...

all are in order of best for small cases or cases with not alot of room

remove plugs out back of case etc wait 1 hour before attempting this lets the electric discharge

before all that you will have to get the old one off your motherboard remove motherboard from your case detach any wires etc

then remove the lever and take out the chip gently remove it and dont bend any pins

    lent free cloth

    http://www.amazon.com/Cloth-Cotton-Lint-free-2-25-...

    rubbing alcohol

    http://www.amazon.com/Swan-Alcohol-99%25-Isopropyl...

and ear bud cotton swap i know wtf but there used alot believe it or not

    mx4 thermal paste

    http://www.amazon.com/Arctic-Cooling-MX-4-Thermal-...

clean the old paste you find on the cpu this needs to be replaced

    how to clean step 1.

take your cpu and put it on one of the lint free clothes

pour the rubbing alchol into a small cup dip the cotton swap in it and rub it on the cpu chip till it has a good coating then rub with lint free cloth do this repeatidly till all time is gone

once you have your new cooler

gently put the cpu into the motherboard match up the lil arrow on cpu with the lil arrow on the cpu socket it should slide into place and then slowly put the handle down if it doesnt budge try reseating it

retim your cpu with paste mx4 a pea size droplet is all you need use a credit card or any type of card like it and spread it evenly till you cant see the metal cpu plate anymore

step 2 is simple follow directions to mount your cooler to your motherboard plug up the fan on cpu cooler mount remount the motherboard back in case reattach everything and your done

i choose mx4 as even if you somehow manage to get a small bit on the motherboard its non electric conductive

That is a very subjective question and the reason why there are so many companies out there that make heat-sinks for CPUs.

First you have to find a heat-sink to fit your CPU and then you have to make sure it will fit inside of your case.

Also did you know that putting an aftermarket CPU cooler on your CPU will void the warranty.

If all your trying to do is keep your CPU cooled at stock specs than just about all of them on the market will work.

If you want to OC your CPU then you will need a large cooler designed just for that. Many of those require a larger case to hold them.

Noctua make amazing heatsinks. You could also go along the lines of a Pre sealed water cooling kit, In which case an Antec kúhler 620/920 would be good.
