Can military personal explore while they are stationed overseas?

Oh yeah, once in port, you can pretty much do as you please so long as it is within boundries of both the host country's laws *and* within the regs of the military. As for truly exploring? Well, when I was in, there was a limit as to how far you could go before having to ask permission; but that limit was really insane, like 200 miles away before notifying your CO and writing a leave chit. As for your example of Japan? So long as you don't have to be anywhere, yeah, take a walking tour; there aren't really any regs against that. Would suggest a buddy though (can't remember if this is a reg or a suggestion; I never paid it any mind).

Heck yeah. When I was stationed in Germany, I traveled to nearly every other European country. Long weekends in London, Paris, Rome, Southern Coast of Spain, island of Ibiza.

In Korea, took a weeks vacation to Australia. Can't remember how many times I flew up to Japan.

You get to do a lot of things, but if you're in a different country you usually have to have a travel buddy. But I still don't think the military is right for you.

On ship, no way. When you are at port and off duty, your free time is yours to do with as your please.
