Has throwing a baby shower gone too far?

Recently i found a invitation that my parents got was going to be a baby shower this coming november. i scanned a bit from it and found out that its going from 12 PM till 8PM. i was wondering..why this long? should it be a normal baby shower running for about 2-3 hours not just 8 whole hours? i remember back about last year, my aunt threw a baby shower from about 4 until 10 or 11 in the evening and everyone was drinking beer, loud music, etc. In other words, has baby showers gone too far and only inviting people just to drink, dance, and staying up until the dead of night all for a baby thats not yet to be born withing a few weeks later instead of the normal of giving a gift and asking of what it is then leave after a couple of hours?

The longest shower I've been was maybe 3 and a half-4 hours. The reason it was that long was the last hour was the mom-to-be opening gifts from all 35 guests.

It sounds like an excuse for people to get drunk and have a party. It's way too long and not really an appropriate event to be getting drunk. I went to a baby shower where the mum had registered for gifts at a very expensive shop and nothing was under $150 I also think this is taking people's generousity too far.

My shower went from 11am-3pm but died off around 2-2.30pm. Mine was at a local park anthee had a little picnic, We had a beautiful sweets table, hot and cold tea and spent the morning in the sun Playing games and opening up gifts! I would never allow alcohol at a baby shower.

Wow, I've never heard of any baby shower ever going that long. Every one I've ever been to has been around 3 hours.
