Syphilis in 1860's. Could it be passed from mother to child?

I am ready Tom Dooley in my college English class. I was wondering if anyone could help me. Now syphilish is curable, but back in the 1860's it wasnt. If a woman with syphilis had a baby, could it be passed on to the baby? Any thoughts?

Yes, it certainly could. You can Google "congenital syphilis" for information on this.
