Disney acquires the rights to Star Wars. Your thoughts? Good or bad thing?
The Walt Disney Company has been working hard to develop strong science-fiction properties over the last few years. But while they've found big success in the acquisition of Marvel Studios - with The Avengers becoming the third biggest release of all time - they've slipped in other areas. In 2010 the studio released Tron Legacy, which ended up making quite a bit of money, but wasn't quite the blockbuster success that everyone expected it to be. Then there was John Carter earlier this year, which was an even bigger disappointment, managing to make only $73 million domestically on a $250 million budget. Now, though, they no longer need to worry about developing sci-fi franchises however - because they've just bought Star Wars.
A truly stunning development, The Walt Disney Company has purchased Lucasfilm for an amazing $4.05 billion in both cash and stock - but that's not even the most stunning part. According to the trade report, they will now begin serious development on Star Wars Episode VII - presumably a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi - and plan to have it in theaters by 2015. Legendary producer Kathleen Kennedy who is currently the co-chair of Lucasfilm, will be promoted to become the new president of the company and will report directly to Alan Horn, the current Walt Disney Studios head.

Sounds to me like George Lucas planned his retirement well. I guess the outcome remains to be seen. I can't imagine that it will be a totally bad thing, although there will be purists who will argue that point. There are not a few Disney films that I like, there are many Disney films that I like, animated and otherwise. But if they are going to make a truly good sequel to this, I can't imagine George Lucas not to be consulted. It is, after all, his universe.
I do expect to see more merchandising which is the backbone of Disney.

I loved the original trilogy and do not care a lot about the prequels.
After the acquiring of Marvel by Disney, many people thought it would ruin the movies, but things turned out ok. So it could be a good thing if they stay true to the original concept by George Lucas, (which he himself managed to screw up badly with the prequels). Also, by hiring the right people, they could make it work.

If they actually stay true to the spirit of the original trilogy and hire some talented people to work on it then it could be OK. Just about all of the best directors and writers out there would kill to get a chance to do Star Wars.
Even if it doesn't work out, it can't be any worse than the last 3 films Lucas made.

I wonder what new twist will they have to the story. After Skywalker and the Princess are brother-sister related, and Darth Vader and Luke are Father-and-son, what then? Maybe Chewbaca a gay, or the Emperor a transvestite, or what. You could not tell how things develop due to money. (lol) Maybe, they develop some Time Machine and land the Enterprise or was it Millenium Falcon? into Jurassic Park or Avatar country. But that would entail lots of acquisitions.

It will probably be very profitable to them. As long as they stay
away from story lines like the ones Lucas did in the prequel
they have a chance. Lucas said he did the prequels because
of Darth Vader being the most evil villain of all time. He wanted
to show Vader wasn't. Well, he just made him more evil that the

It's OK as long as Mickey and Minnie don't end up in the next episode. The Disney people are shameless about plugging their main line.

The original three were the best and other sequels just not the same. It looks like their success in this film genre is not the best. i guess we will see what happens over time.

Wow ,it seems like every company is buying each other out.The first three Star Wars will always be the best! I guess we just have to see how it goes for them.

I am worried they will fail to meet the same style of Lucas, but then again might excell, I wish them good luck.
I don't want to see a rehash of what we have already seen.

You never know, the Sequel Trilogy might be good. I'm more curious to see what they'll do with Indiana Jones, to tell you the truth.
