In the Emergency Room, do I have the right to tell doctors to not give my mother specific medicines?

My 82 year old mother fell, which was initially thought to be a seizure but was later diagnosed to be a mini stroke. She had horrible reactions to the seizure medications that they initially gave her in the hospital and I never want her to have those ever again.

- Should she ever need to be hospitalized, as her son do I have the right to tell attending physicians that I do not want my mother to be given seizure medications under any circumstances, even if they want to?

Yes, you have the right. Whether they will do ask you ask is another matter, even if you have power of attorney... which she must also sign if she is mentally competent. She has to give you the power of attorney by her signature. You can't just take it.

Most hospitals, however to appreciate getting a list of all meds she cannot take - and why she can't take them.
