Is a forensic scientist and a detective the same thing?

Also, what do you need to study to become one of the jobs given?

I'm thinking an A degree in Biology, A degree in Chemistry, and A degree in law.

While they are often the same on TV, they are not in real life. A detective is a police officer. They "solve crimes" by compiling all the evidence and filling in all the gaps so that the prosecutor can prove beyond a reasonable doubt in court that the suspect committed the crime. One way a detective can get evidence is to ask a forensic scientist. A forensic scientist can be either a police officer or not, but they apply science to evidence from a crime in order to answer specific questions such as "Does the DNA from the crime scene match the suspect?" Forensic scientists should not "solve crimes" the way a detective does because they are supposed to be totally impartial.

If you would like to become a detective, most places require a college degree (but not necessarily in a particular field) and several years of experience. You would start as a police recruit and have to work your way up the chain of command, similar to a person working his or her way up to the rank of captain or general in the military.

You would need a Bachelor's degree in a natural science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) or forensic science and 1-2 years of experience working in a laboratory. A Master's degree in a natural science or forensic science can substitute for the experience.

no, they aren't. a detective is employed by a police department, and has a degree in criminal science.

a forensic scientist is employed by various agencies- say a state crime lab, or other research facility- and has a degree in forensic science, with a minor in research (usually)
