door knob doesn't turn back to center?

Exterior door knob, schlage, wood-core steel door, probalby 20-30 years old or more. Typical door knob with key on outside, little turn dial in the center of the knob on the inside that locks/unlocks.

So just recently when you let go of the door knob after turning it, it does not return to center/rotate back to the normal position. The door works just fine, it's just that I now have to actually think about it when I am leaving and want to lock it and/or when I come home and unlock it. I'm assuming a spring of some sort is broken, anyone know which and if it can be easily replaced??

I know I could just get a new one but there are a bunch of people who I've given keys to and it would be easier for me to just keep this door knob/lock assembly! Can anyone point me in the right direction? Haven't taken it apart yet so no I do not know if it's something blatantly obvious. Not sure if it's the knob mechanism or the latch mechanism that do the returning to center part of the job??

Thanx.

It would cost more to have it repaired than it would to replace the knob. You can have the lock keyed to your existing key by a locksmith or order the lock keyed by the manufacturer.

It sounds to me like your latch is most likely the problem. After years of use the latch will sometimes get worn out and the spring mechanism in it won't work quite like it should. We've found that is most often the problem with these symptoms. Schlage is one of the most poular brands so you should be able to get a replacement latch from a local locksmith or shop that sells Schlage - if you can't find them, we have them available. We'd probably just need to see a picture of what you have to make sure we can still get a replacement for you.

It could also be the spring mechanism in the knob itself that is worn out. If that is the case, it's probably best to replace the knob - however, you could get a new knob keyed to the same code as your existing keys so that you don't have to swap out keys with everyone that has one.

If you loosen the screws a bit that hold the doorknob, it will be easier to turn. As for the deadbold, I'm not to sure but it may just need some lubrication. You can use dish soap if needed. Also works on sliding doors.

Try WD-40 on the latch, and open and close it. Or try taking off the metal frame around the latch on the door edge and just looseing it a bit and reposition.

You might have to call a locksmith. They could repair it or replace the lock assembly and keep the old cylinder.
