What would happen if both Jerusalem and Mecca were nuked at the same time?
What would be the resulting effects on politics and society in the middle east. Taking into account that both cities (especially Jerusalem) have been central to religious conflict for milennia.
@Maka: If you had nukes that could produce enough fallout to cover the entire world, it probably would destroy a little bit more than two cities.
@?: Unknown third party. But the nukes being detonated at the same time would prevent blame being pointed to Israel or Saudi Arabia or the rest of the arab world.
@Girl with obnoxious tone to her typing: Causative, Mecca was fought over in tribal wars between arabic pagans and muslims during the time of Muhammad. Jerusalem has had numerous wars with religious motive, some are minor like the ones in the Bible, others are larger, such as a majority of the Crusades. Though you could argue that the Crusades was actually started due to the need to lend aid to Byzantine trade routes, it's quite clear that they had a moment where they said "Hey, while we're here, let's take back Jerusalem, Jesus would want us to!"

then the whole world would suffer a nuclear fallout.
edit: even the recent small incident in japan worried the whole world because of the radioactive materials released in the ocean.

Please clarify, do you mean have been central to religious conflict as in been the cause of it or do you mean they have always been in the middle of religious conflict do to where they are located at?

Depends who nuked them.
EDIT: If they were nuked, wouldn't they know where to point the blame? A country can't secretly launch a nuclear missile can it? Assuming they can't, i think their reactions might depend on who nuked them. If it wasn't possible for them to know who to blame, I still don't think there'd be a nuclear exchange between Saudi Arabia and Israel. If a nuke hit Saudi Arabia, and they saw that a nuke hit Israel at the same time (which they would know of coz that news would travel so fast), then they would probably assume that an outside country attacked both them and Israel, rather than assuming Israel attacked them, and vice versa.
Hard to say what would happen if they did know who nuked them, if a country like the USA or Russia attacked them then they might not retaliate because they would surely lose. Are we assuming it was the same country who attacked both Israel and Saudi Arabia. Maybe they'd retaliate if it was the same country because it'd be 2 against 1. Maybe M.A.D. would stop a nuclear exchange, probably not though considering how close the US & USSR came to nuclear war.
