how do you tell gmo vs non gmo via an electrophoresis gel?
We have our molecular weight marker added. we added two non-gmo controls and a test into the wells, but the lines in the gel don't make sense to me....i know it's based on molecule size/weight, but how does that relate to gmos? (we're testing corn chips)

Corn chips and all GMO corn products usually have a B toxin gene that was biologically engineered into them to deter insects from destroying corn crops. If this is the case you would want to target this gene (or the one of interests for your GMO project, there could be many not just this B toxin) primers would be made to make many copies of this genes DNA sequence if its there. If its not there then no PCR product would be made. If you know the size of this B toxin gene from the ladder and you see that your sample has a band at the same place in the gel then it contains the gene meaning it was genetically modified. All corn products contain an invertase gene which could be used as a PCR control, primers would be made for this gene and a pcr would be done and you would expect bands to show up at this weight because it is a positive control.
In your experiment the two non gmo controls shouldnt show any bands but the possible gmo sample will if it is a gmo. More info on what modified gene your looking at and what primers you used would be good to know. If you have a picture of your gel that would be helpful too.

i for my area do no longer care, however the advice could be attainable. there is little scientific debate appropriate to the familiar and protection of GMO ingredients as ingredients. yet there is important debate appropriate to the a possibility long term outcomes on the atmosphere as nicely simply by fact the truly grotesque way agribusiness 'protects' their psychological supplies that they insist on freeing to the wind. the regular public could be recommended to pick. Be that because it could there is not any commercial nutrition crop that's no longer genetically changed. that's merely that the way it became completed for 2 hundred years became selective breeding and bypass breeding - merely as unnatural simply by fact the extra useful gene splicing. And a approach or the different the worldwide grew to 7 billion frequently nicely fed human beings.
