How to help my 4 year old to stop wetting the bed?

She and her sibs were taken by CPS and turned over to us (Grandparents) so I understand she has some reason to be traumatized but she's been here over a year and a half and is fully adopted. She was potty trained before she was taken. Now she has to wear a diaper at night and sometimes poops on herself, then smears it all over the place. I don't know how to help her. Please help!

She's still young... Diapers and psychological help (training) are probably the options you have.

If she continues to wet the bed as time goes by, contact a professional (doctor etc)

For the bed setting, it is perfectly normal. Just comfort her afterwards. If it continues for a couple years, then you should take an interest, but for now it is ok.

As for the pooping, at four, she definitely knows it is wrong. The next time it happens warn her. The time after that, tell her you aren't going to clean it up and that she will have to stay in her poopy pants. I know this seems mean after what she has gone through, but after much experience, this is the only way I got my daughter to stop.

Pooping herself, then smearing it all over the place does sound a bit psychologically disturbed. I don't know if four years old is too early to see a therapist, but if it's not, you may want to look into this.

As for bedwetting, it's not uncommon for four-year-olds to wet the bed, especially if they've been through some sort of trauma. About 13% of six-year-olds wet the bed[1], so you can imagine how common it is for four-year-olds to wet the bed. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it persists as she gets older. Then you should take her to her pediatrician, and listen to his recommendations.

    Good luck.

I would continue to use diapers on her at night but also use the vinyl diaper covers (the plastic diaper pants used for cloth diapering) over the regular diapers to help hold everything in the diapers.

Wetting the bed at the age of four is pretty normal.

The bowel problems are different. Some children who have lactose intolerance feel a sense of urgency and have little control over their bowels. You might discuss this with her pediatrician.

Be sure to give her plenty of fluids before she goes to bed. Make her take her poopy diapers to school for show and tell :)

If she is still wetting the bed when she turns 8 you can be concerned, otherwise she is perfectly normal in that regard.

As for the poo just gently clean her up and explain that poo is yucky, we do poos in the toilet and that we don't play with it.
