Are there any good scholarly articles on the prevalence of hypermasculinity in different cultures?

I am REALLY interested in this topic, but no matter what I look for, I cannot find a good scholarly article that talks about the prevalence of the masculine ideal and hypermasculinity in society in the United States...which is hard to believe. I also wanted to see the difference between masculinity in the US and compare it to Europe (specifically Italy, because that's where I'm from).

I wanted to do a project on this next semester or maybe next year...but if there's no research on it then I will have to look for something else to do :( Please help! This is a topic I am very interested in!
