If there were no God/Jesus would there still be a point to being a Christian?

Suspend your disbelief for a moment. *If* there were no God, and no Jesus... would there be any reason to be a Christian and/or follow the teachings of the Bible?

I'm asking because I believe that there is still value in Buddhist teachings even if Buddha was a regular man/never existed.

peace.

Buddha was a regular man. It doesn't really relate to Christianity or your theory at all.

As for there being a point to being a Christian without a God- isn't that what's going on already? No God yet people still believing. I think it's fine if it brings you comfort but I disagree with the actual teachings. Remember the bible endorses slavery and the treatment of women as property. It also condemns homosexuals. My point is there are some really unpleasant teachings in the bible and astonishingly people go along with it.

You know, Citrine, you are a very intelligent person and I mean that very sincerely! And I do wish you the Great Joy of the Birth of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus!

Christianity is based upon the historical fact that Jesus was born, crucified, buried and rose from the dead. If that historical fact is false, then Christianity is pointless because people would still die in their sins.

Actually, Paul addressed your very question specifically and I have quoted a several verses directly but there is more that I have not quoted. It is a matter of logic. Notice that the resurrection is tied to the Jewish firstfruits.

1 Corinthians 15:12 (KJV) Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then [is] our preaching vain, and your faith [is] also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith [is] vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man [came] death, by man [came] also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24 Then [cometh] the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy [that] shall be destroyed [is] death.

There is still value. Much of the Bible involves moral teachings just as the Buddhist teachings. The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom.

Yeah, there probably would. In one way it is beneficial because some people need the idea of forgiveness to be okay with themselves. And, also if one were to think there is a reward for being good, it is beneficial for self esteem when one feels that they deserve a reward. Even IF one weren't due, and they didn't know that.

But, the benefit you are talking about is more personal, right? Than benefit to others if a particular religion associated with the belief exists in society? ie: Christianity?

So, the belief, and adherence to the 'precepts' or whatever, can be beneficial to the individual, while the religion is a detriment to society, [minus my inclusion of Hitchens argument], even if no god exists.

I really don't get how your question relates to Buddhism.

No Christ would mean no Christianity, would mean no point.

Fortunately however there is and He is and I'm glad I am.
