Would gun owners be supportive of a law that really punished criminals?

Depends on the illegal weapon. If "assault weapons" are outlawed, I will most certainly be breaking that law to the utmost of my ability.

However, I heartily endorse ramping up penalties for using a deadly weapon in a crime.

I agree 100%, except that it should be a life sentence for illegal possession of any weapon. That means that if a felon out of jail gets a gun, they should be locked up for life. If they commit a crime and have a gun with them, they should be locked up for life.

Here's a good example of our failed judicial system: A man is convicted of attempted murder and does less than 5 years. He gets out, gets a gun and shoots a cop in Queens. It was all over the newspaper and on the news stations. Then politicians act surprised: 'How did this happen?' If you let animals like that out of prison in the first place, what do you expect to happen?

Gun crimes are already some of the worst offenses people can go to prison for. Often for decades. How is making it more illegal going to solve anything? And what is an 'illegal' weapon? What the anti-gun liberals decide to ban you from having?

Sounds great to me. Let's just make sure we will never make it illegal for politicians to lie to us.
