Why the large 5 pointed stars on homes and barns?

While traveling through the east of the United States and Canada I noticed some homes had a star mounted on their home or out building. What is the significance of this? I noticed that two points were always pointed down. Is there any significance to this or can the star be placed with the legs pointing in any direction?

Update:

Errrrg remember Texas is not in eastern U.S.

The barn and shed stars were originated from German farmers in Penn. in the 1700s and they mean good luck and good fortune.

The Amish stars mean good luck charms and wards off evil.

    Some express patriotism.

    Decoration.

    Religious symbols.

    Country feel at home.

To represent the pentacle star. Symble of fortune and good health.

Colored ones can mean a family member has served or is serving, been wounded or killed in a war.

The stars on barns can be explained as symbolic of Texas. I assume the stars on the houses are an extension of that, or simply a decoration with no other meaning.

As for the orientation, the two legs pointed down are more iconic in America. It's just how we imagine the star shape. Not sure why, that's just how it is.

Barns especially, used to have symbols painted on them to keep evil spirits away. I think the most often used was a pentagram, many with a star in them, so the star may come from that.
