I would not recommend the AR-15 for hunting. Use your Remington 870 for that. The .223 and 5.56 are not hunting rounds. If you want an AR-15 for the range, you surely won't be disappointed. It's a lot of fun to shoot. Between the two, I would choose the .45 handgun. You can't conceal carry your AR-15, so if a ccw permit is something you someday become interested in, there are many great .45 handguns out there. Personally, I like the Springfield XD line of pistols, and I find it very easy to conceal my XD-45 Compact.

I own a California Legal AR-15. It is a Fulton Armory FAR-15 Battle with an A2 stock, Pistol Grip, and a magazine lock. It's not as big of a hassle as everyone says it is. DON'T GET THE FIXED MAGAZINE! Purchase the MAGAZINE LOCK! The magazine lock surrounds the magazine release so you have to insert a tool to drop the magazine. This is why they also call it a "bullet button" because a bullet fits inside perfectly. It really depends depends on what you are planning to use the firearm for. If you want to hunt, its a no brainer, the AR-15 is what you need. The only problem is the cost of ammunition. .45 ACP is less expensive than the .223/ 5.56... but .45 ACP is really hard to come by right now. It seems 45 has almost completely dried up. If you want to build your own AR15 you can do that too. It's really not as hard as people think and there are so may options for upper receivers and lower receivers and there are many videos online that you can watch demonstrating how to put one together. Good Luck. -Death
