Why do people say "Asian"?

Why do people call people from countries like China or Japan Asian? Because technically someone from a middle-eastern country is also Asian but when people say Asian, they mean people with slanted eyes. If Asian isn't the correct term, is oriental or far-eastern okay? Thank you!

:-D smiley face thoughts.

Update:

@ Angelina Love. Not all people from Middle-Eastern countries are Arabs.

Update 2:

@Markk I know they're from Asia, the thing is that most people ONLY consider people with slanted eyes Asian and not the rest of Asia.

@Keir I'm okay with people calling people from Asia Asian but I'm talking about when people say stuff like "Asians have pointy eyes" and they only mean far-Easters instead of all Asians.

@Thinking About It lol I actually call people "human" or "person" sometimes.

@efetge kids in my class call oriental people "Chinese" even if they know that they're from (or their heritage is from) another country like Thailand and even if they're from a non-Asian country but have tan skin and almond-shaped eyes. They're the dumb students...

Update 3:

@Walden that's what I'm talking about. Even on google, people only think Asians are far-Easterns.

People from china and Japan are still Asian. There are countries that a lot of people probably wouldn't consider Asian though, or even know they're Asian. Like Kazakhstan for example, I have a cousin adopted from there, you probably wouldn't think of him as Asian if you saw him, he's blonde haired and blue eyed and doesn't have the "slanted" features.

    Ummm...that's what I thought too

I say Asian when I refer to people with slanted eyes

The ones from the Middle East, I just call them Arabs

Ho-hum. I really ought to just save this spiel, but I haven't yet. Here goes:

"In North America, Australia, and New Zealand, 'Asian' means 'East Asian'. In the UK and Ireland, "Asian" means 'South Asian'. Both places are on the continent of Asia. In other words, 'Asian' has many meanings. 'Oriental'* is OK to use in the UK, though it sounds jarring to North American ears."

*Not to mention 'Oriental' just means 'Eastern', so you COULD talk about the east coast of any continent as 'oriental', and in fact people do that in Spanish.

When I say Asian, I usually mean Chinese or Japanese. I suppose I am ignorant to what the world actually means although it's not something I've learned, and I never had a real interest in Geography at school.

East Asian = Asian to most people. If someone wants to refer to Indians or Middle Easterners they will differentiate.

its not racist or anything to call an individual from their nationallity. If it is incorrect to call people from Asia, Asian, then surely i get racial abuse daily by people calling me Scottish everyday, living in England - just as much as i call them English. It is not bad

yes it is the correct term so dont worry(:

How about we just start calling everyone an "earthling" just to simplify things?
