Why are my ankles still swollen?

On the 14th December last year I cruckled badly into a pot hole, I'm not sure which foot went first but I damaged both of them so badly that I had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. My left ankle and my right foot were damaged, but they both swelled up massively. They were x rayed and I was told it was only soft tissue damage and that I had to keep mobile but at the same time rest...??? I couldn't walk without crutches for the first couple of days and the pain was horrendous. There was bruising pretty much coming out the day after the injuries. I am now mobile, and there is still some bruising there, but both feet are still swollen, albeit that the swelling has gone down and I can now get some shoes on, but not all.

My concern is that this was over three weeks ago now, and I don't know whether I should go back to my GP and see what he says, or whether, because the injury was so severe, it will take some time for the swelling to go down and I should just persevere. I'm not a stupid person, it's not that I need advice about whether to go to the GP, it's just that I honestly don't want to be a time waster, but have never had a injury like this before and don't know what to do.

At some point in time you just have to accept that your fat and quit blaming it on pot holes.

Have you been icing, elevating, and taking your ibuprofen? If not, then this could be a huge part of it.

There are some hairline breaks that are very difficult for a GP to diagnose and often take the trained eye of a Podiatric Surgeon. But, you can also do severe tendon and ligament damage without breaking a bone - and the pain/healing is much more difficult than a break.

You may need to see a specialist to see if you need some sort of surgery to repair torn or damaged soft tissue. You may need to see a specialist for better advice, especially if you are questioning the extent of the injuries and your previous diagnosis.

I'd go back to the doctor just for a check up, they may be able to give pain relief or something to help :) your not a time waster don't worry as to be fair it's there job to make sure everything's ok, make sure you stay mobile as i made that mistake when I torn the cartilliage in my knee and all the muscles had worn away from using crutches by the time it healed and they take years to get back to full strength (2 years on I'm strengthening them) so keep mobile and visit your doctor x good luck x :)

It usually takes 6 months for swelling to completely go down so don't worry, and as you still have some bruising it might take a little longer. It's normal so don't worry.
