Is it normal for heating unit to emit gas odor? I have central air and a less than 10 year old heating system.?

It emitted a strong (gas-like) odor a while ago. I've turned it off and called hvac company to come check it (probably will be a few days before they come). i have two units, one upstairs and one downstairs. carbon monoxide alarms have not gone off (though i know carbon monoxide is odorless).

Update:

Polar Bear, easy on jumping to conclusions, fellow. The house, and therefore the unit are almost ten years old. I've only lived here 6 months. I had a check up done in October, 3 months ago (before i started using the system), and everything was fine. I have been using the system regularly at nights, and sometimes mornings. This morning was first time I smelled what seemed like gas. I will call gas company as well. meanhwile, i've already requested service/check up from hvac company.

It is not normal for heating unit to emit gas odour, it is dangerous to the point that an explosion could occur. Call your gas company and tell then, they mat send a technician over right away. Do not delay as you may have a very dangerous situation. CO detectors will not detect the gas.

How many of the almost 10 years have you had a preseason heat tuneup & cleaning service done?? What you need to understand is the HVAC systems need regular maintenance. That is why we preach and preach to have bi-annual service done, so problems like this can be caught BEFORE it becomes a problem. Its NOT just so we can find something to charge you for. UGH!

This sounds to me like a THOROUGH cleaning (burners) and heat exchanger check needs to be done in the WORST WAY...If the heat exchanger has a crack in it, products of combustion will enter the living space. -thats bad. Have you bothered to change the filter? If you had service done on it, you would know whether or not the thing has venting problems.

You really gotta take some responsibility here... NOT having the thing serviced regularly not only shortens the life of the system, it degrades the efficiency and wastes energy and money.

(edit) wow, really?? You see, I am not a mind reader. You did not point out that you have been in charge of this unit FOR 6 MONTHS. You may want to consider being clear and not failing to reveal any and all pertinent information relevant to the specifics of the unit that you are having problems with!! Everything's relevant.

Nice try blaming everyone but yourself

Anytime one smells gas in the house they should leave the house immediately and call the gas company. Hope your problem is not serious as the scent of gas can be so dangerous.

first guess is it is not burning cleanly

second guess is something is blocking the exit pipes (chimney) - like a bird's nest ???

a strong wind down the chimney can push some of the burned gas smell out into your room.

Source(s): I have a gas HWT and furnace, but I do not really know.

    NO.

Not sure what's causing you're problem, but you shouldn't be smelling it no. It's not normal
