Serious mechanics only?

2000 Dodge Ram 1500 w/ 5.2lt multi port injection

It acts like it runs out of fuel, spits n sputters. The gauge works, I just put 20 drops of gold (93oct) in it. When I press the schradder valve on the fuel rail I get air pressure, like the fuel pump got a big gulp of air. After I get the air out the van runs fine, but a little while later I it runs out and I get more air, then it runs fine. After 30yrs, now I'm baffled!

Fuel pump is working

Got fire

No trouble codes

Just release the air pressure and it runs..........???????????

Update:

Thanks ya'll, I'll check the return line. There's nothing leaking under the van, checked. Can't remember, should I have an evaporator system, have ya'll ever seen that cause a problem like this? I KNOW that I shouldn't have air in the fuel rail, that's for fuel! Have either of you ever seen an electric fuel pump intermediately work???

Update 2:

For Andrew Bruce.........The fuel pump is still the original, Never had a problem like this before

For Dr Peppers...........I got gas at the BP around the corner from me. I've never even heard of any problems with their gas, a lot of my neighbors go there also

Update 3:

Micheal S......It actually left me on the side of the road last night, in the snow no doubt, 1st time for everything I guess. I'm pretty sure the air is blowing out. It runs good and then sputters out. INTERMITTENT AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could give everybody the 'Best Answer' just for helping me scratch my head, but this thing won't let me!

What is the fuel pressure? It should be somewhere around 50PSI and steady. If not, your fuel pump is not working, or you have a big leak in the line in the tank, or something is plugged. There should not be "air" in the fuel rail, ever.

not sure id check to c if u hit something in the road and dented ur fuel tank pushed up maybe that or a leak in fuel line or its not returning propperly good luck hope this helps pump if not a sealed unit may have a bad rubber line on it pumping air instead of fuel

Hey, also check the small hose between the pump and the sending unit. If there is a crack there it will create bubbles and for the most part only circulate fuel in the tank. I have had that happen on a few dodges in the past.

There's a possibility it could be the fuel filter having an intermittant clog that falls out of the way when the engine stops. But the air coming out of the rail. Are you sure it's coming out or sucking in?

Good luck with this one. I hate intermittants.

Check to fuel injector return line. Maybe clogged. Should not have air in the system.
