The old 9mm Parabellum vs. 45 ACP argument, reloaded for New Yorkers?

Putting aside the emotions involved in feel-good/do nothing positive/pain in the rear laws, now that New York has coerced you into carrying two 1911's instead of a Glock 19, are you really that worse off? Yes, the two 1911's will be more expensive, and heavier, but won't you still come out OK? And have any New Yorkers actually asked their representatives why they want to make 45 ACP more popular?

I see the humor in your question, but there is nothing humorous about the governor of New York suspending the NY constitutionally mandated 3-day waiting period between the introduction of a bill and the vote. His statement that about needing to take "emergency action" is nothing but hot air.

Almost more ridiculous is the component of the law that bans magazines over 7 rounds but allows you to keep magazines of up to 10 rounds- for now. However, you are not allowed to load those 10 round magazines with more than 7 rounds or you will face misdemeanor charges. Within a year, owners of 10 round magazines are required to sell them out of state. (If 10 round magazines are such a problem, why are they dumping their problems on other states???)

Bolt action hunting rifles with detachable magazines are now considered 'assault weapons' and must be registered with NY state within one year. Of course all other firearms that have one prohibited feature are also considered 'assault weapons' and must be registered within one year.

As bad as this gun control is, what is worse is that New York's governor violated his own state's constitution to pass it.

Actually, I think the Glock 36 just became their friend if they can carry at all.

The point below was well made about Cuomo violating the New York Constitution. I tend to agree with some of the conservative pundits that Obama badly misjudged the actual feeling of his base after Newtown. Evidently people just aren't compelled that he can or maybe wants to keep them safe.

I personally think he has almost no dog in the fight personally at all and was (and is) still looking for an easy legislative win to stamp by his name. However, as this is turning tougher than he thought, I think they are backpeddling and it is causing the REAL lunies - like Cuomo to panic, particularly as we get further and further from Newtown and the continuing evidence that nothing that has been proposed by the gun control lobby would have made any difference there.

I have not seen the entire law. But from the basis of what I have read, they are banning all magazines (and possibly clips?) that hold more than 7 rounds. This is NOT a ban on new magazine purchases. This time it is an outright ban on ownership of a magazine capable of holding more than 7 rounds.

Now let's take a look at the guns that use mags of 8 or more rounds.

    M1 Garand Rifle

    Ruger 10/22 Rifle

Ruger Mark I, Mark II and Mark III pistols

S&W model 39 and all clones

I am also wondering about the legality of tube-fed 22 rifles. The Marlin model 60 holds 15 rounds. Think about it!

If your are "carrying" a gun in NY, then isn't it illegal anyway? It doesn't matter whether it is two 1911s or a glock with hi-cap mags. In the eyes of the NY law you are a criminal and criminals don't care.

Maybe the politicians in New York own stock in one of the major 1911 manufacturers. Are any of them publicly traded? Springfield? Kimber? Colt?
