Do libtards actually not know what A WELL REGULATED MILITIA means?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The word "Militia" means everyday able bodied men (and women in today's context). Militia is NOT the regular army. A militia has always meant everyday people who are not part of the government. What the constitution is saying here is that everyday people having the ability to form a militia is necessary to the security of a free state because that is the only thing that can 100% protect against a holocaust. What is the biggest threat to the security of a free state? The government of course (just look at Red China and the USSR 166 million civilians killed by both governments combined)! You think it "couldn't happen here"? Need I remind you that Hitler was popularly elected by the German people?

A well regulated militia = everyday people

Purpose of the militia = defend the freedoms of the people from the government

Regular military = Army & Navy (Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard fall under Army and Navy)

Purpose of the military = defend America from foreign invaders

When the framers of the Constitution got together at the convention, they had a number of issues of disagreement. To their great credit, I think, they managed to resolve all these issues through compromise. Think our 'statesmen' of today could do that?

Anyway, one issue was whether or not the new nation should have a standing army. A standing army would be a permanent, full-time, professional military under control of the federal govt. Many delegates wanted to stick with the militia system, part-time 'citizen-soldiers' who would drill together once a month or so, then come together when needed to fight a war, and they would be under the control of the various states.

The main argument against a standing army was the expense of keeping up a full-time army. Also nations that had standing armies tended to constantly be at war, perhaps to justify the expense. And finally a few countries, the generals had gained enough power to take over the whole country in a 'military coup' or 'junta'.

In the end a compromise was reached. The nation would have a standing army, and the states would also be allowed to keep their militias. Which, a few years later, were re-named the National Guard.

'The People' in the 2nd Amendment, means the states, NOT individual people. The 2nd Amendment was never meant to guarantee your right to have as many guns as you want, of whatever type, and to carry them around, and to point them at anyone who cuts you off in traffic.

And the silliest idea of gun nuts, the most outrageous bit of anti-history, is the ridiculous idea that the purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to facilitate armed insurrection against our democratically-elected government. That's got to be about the dumbest thing I ever heard, that our government is so evil and corrupt that they want to take all our guns away so they can make us all slaves. After Shay's Rebellion (1786-87) states were allowed to maintain their militias to fight -against- armed insurrections!

    Don't forget "well regulated."

The following are taken from the Oxford English Dictionary, and bracket in time the writing of the 2nd amendment:

1709: "If a liberal Education has formed in us well-regulated Appetites and worthy Inclinations."

1714: "The practice of all well-regulated courts of justice in the world."

1812: "The equation of time ... is the adjustment of the difference of time as shown by a well-regulated clock and a true sun dial."

1848: "A remissness for which I am sure every well-regulated person will blame the Mayor."

1862: "It appeared to her well-regulated mind, like a clandestine proceeding."

1894: "The newspaper, a never wanting adjunct to every well-regulated American embryo city."

The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people's arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.

A militia was formed to help defend the country. This was before there was an army or any other regulated military. today, our military, specifically, national guard and reservists, is large enough to defend this country's people. We have no militia today because it isn't needed... just like assault weapons. No one aside from military and police need to own an assault rifle.

Now before you get your thong in a bunch, I believe in the 2nd amendment. I believe that people should be allowed to own guns. I own several guns, but I have no need for an assault rifle.

"In landmark Supreme courtroom case District of Columbia v. Heller, it was once determined that the term in the 2nd amendment of the united states structure "well-regulated militia" without difficulty meant that the proprietor had to comply with existing gun legal guidelines" assess mate. Good-regulated, means well regulated. Obey gov't gun regulations.

    You're absolutely wrong.

Yes, by "militia," the founders meant everyday ablebodied men.

The purpose of the "militia" was extremely obvious: if the British returned to reclaim their colonies, they needed the public to be able to rise up as "minutemen" to form a credible fighting force. Early America did not have the resources to maintain a standing army capable of defending itself against European invaders.

That moment in history ended a long time ago.

  • Do who know? Apparently a whole lot of people on the right don't know judging by their growing calls for rebellion and civil war. The patriots on the left are the ones working for common sense gun safety. As cons also apparently don't know, every amendment including freedom of speech and religion comes with restrictions. By your logic, we should just give every child a tank.

So felons and convicted murders have gun rights?

  • Militial = people

Well regulated = structured, following rules, priciples

well regulated militia = people following rules decided by democratic procedure, by "fed'ruhl gummint".

If only there was a preamble or something to the Bill of Rights to explain the intent of the 1st 10 Amendments. Seems like an oversight something like that wasn't written.
