Child support for a 16 year old?

My daughter is now 16 and has never had a relationship with her father. He has never paid child support and he last saw her when she was 1 year old. Now that she is16 she is curious about who he is. I know he lives in another state, I found him on Facebook. My question is can I apply for child support for her now? I've never filed before now, I've always paid my own way and took care of her myself. But I'm curious what my options are now. He and I were never married. There is no questions that he is the biological father. He signed the birth cert and we lived together for the first year of her life. Any input will he helpful. thanks

Update:

reply to the first answer. why is the sadistic and why shouldi be concerned about his financial well being? i've been the responsible parent for 16 years. what is wrong with expecting the other parent to step up and contribute?

I don't know about USA but in UK child maintenance is paid until the child reaches the age of 19 or goes to work.

You could contact the relevant department (in UK its called the Child Support Agency or CSA) and have a word with them, you wont get it backdated but if your daughter is still at school then he is liable.

    Best of luck.

so you want to put him in debt for the rest of his life... 16 years of back child support (which is what the govt will do no matter what you want)... which for him will be life devastating.

Are you in such desperate straights after 16 years that it needs to change now?? Should the 16 yr old be finding a job?

It's one thing if he was involved in her life - if he had the opportunity to know her growing up - he could have paid as she grew... but now you want to hand him a bill for - approx $70,000 BEFORE they add 16 years of interest to it.

Had a friend have this happen to him -- ruined his life, and he was never even given the opportunity to help raise his child. He just got a bill.

    Seems pretty sadistic to me.
