Why do so many people assume that atheists who legitimately question Christianity haven't read the bible?

Do they not realize that many atheists, like me, are former Christians and know very well what the bible says? Do they not also know that atheists, as a whole, are much more familiar with the bible than Christians, as a whole, are? After all, for many of us, reading the bible is what made us atheist.

Update:

@Christian Skeptic -- Chuckle all you want. It's actually been demonstrated: http://www.examiner.com/article/atheists-beat-chri...

Update 2:

Just because you don't like the words that the particular article chose doesn't change the fact that the Pew Research Forum discovered that atheists are more knowledgeable about the bible than Christians are, with agnostics coming in second.

You may know what the Bible says but you do not understand what it means.

Such a foolish position you take. And even worse you boast in your foolishness! And publicly.

The Devil has a perfect knowledge of what the Bible says and freely quotes it, or misquotes it, but it does not profit him at all.

But in his case he now understands it, which is what burns him and makes him wild.

Were you to understand you would fly to God for His mercy and salvation.

You are walking upon an eggshell, which if it breaks will plunge you into the same condition.

Oh I seriously doubt you know the bible. You are probably well versed in whatever doctrines or dogmas your church put out there, rarely are those things of the bible though.

Question Christianity all you want but in doing so attempt to come up with at least one legitimate question about Scripture.

Reading the bible did not make you atheist but God did, pre-ordained to condemnation.

It is better to have not known God than to have known Him and turned away.

Maybe one of the Christian assumed the atheists made the mistake of reading the bible from genesis 1:1 and stop at "amen" at the end of revelation.

Perhaps the Christian assumes the atheist is a braindead idiot

I believe its just a terribly inaccurate assumption.

I agree I've seen prominent atheists debate scripture with reverents & pastors there knowledge is far superior then the so called holy men

its always amazed me how little Christians know about the bible because they only listen to cherry picked parts read to them by church leaders. Like you I was raised Christians & starting having doubts at around 8 when questions I asked were always dodged so in my teens I started reading the bible for myself I really shocked when I read the parts about Jesus (in more then 1 gospel) told his followers to leave there wives & kids and act like they have no family not plan for the future or plant crops because he would soon return for judgement day within the 1st deciples lifetime. that's a crazy or wicked man but when do you hear this preached about

Any way I'm off to sacrifice ice cream to Odin chewbacca & the ufos who keep probing me (I wouldn't mind but they never call the next day)

Because we constantly see questions like the one earlier today asking "What's the difference between pagans worshiping ancestors and Christians worshiping Jesus?" You mean to tell me that your atheist chum there has any kind of a grasp of the Bible?

And that's not a unique type of ignorance, either. Especially not here.

"atheists, as a whole, are much more familiar with the bible than Christians as a whole"

    LOL ok Chuckles...

    ---------------------------------------

From your article: "It is also an established fact that those less knowledgeable about the Bible are the mouthy, believe-my-way-or-else fundamentalist Christians."

Do you really think this group represents "Christians as a whole"? Atheists like you are seriously intellectually inept, getting by with something of an air of intelligence only on the basis of the supreme ignorance of your Fundy counterparts.

In other words, you appear smart only because the Fundies to which you compare yourselves are dumb.

    Nobody assumes that.

"Do they not realize that many atheists, like me, are former Christians'

Yep, many atheists are former Christians rebelling against their parents.

They just question atheists understanding of the Bible.

Because they keep asking questions about why Christians don't observe Mosaic law (the answer is in the bible).

I feel the same way, i am atheist who once was a christian. It's ignorance, you can't really change their minds. It's the way they think. You can do nothing more then to just educate the person. It's not really a clear answer to me, but ignorance. I don't think it is one.
