  • What would have been involved in tending corn in the 17th or 18th century?

I am writing a fantasy story that is initially set on a farm where corn is grown. What are some of the things that someone tending the corn would need to do while out in the field? This would have been set before modern technology, so I need some details of how people would have tended corn by hand. What sorts of tools would have been needed?

As much detail as possible would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

  • Christians, do you read Ezekiel 23:20 to inspire you?

After all, every passage in the bible should inspire you, right?

  • Good ideas for quadratic problems?

I'm a high school math teacher and am trying to come up with a good word problem that will have students write (but not solve) a quadratic function. Thus far, I've had them calculate trajectories (in November I used "Punkin' Chunkin" as a way to introduce quadratics) and I've also come up with some area problems, but I'm running out of ideas for word problems that would require them to write a quadratic function.

I want to avoid writing one that is of the type where sales go down as price goes up because I've always found that model to be a little too artificial.

Anybody else have any good ideas for me?

  • Why do so many Christians insist on claiming that atheists believe the Big Bang came from nothing?

Nobody is claiming that the Big Bang came from nothing. We don't know what the Big Bang came from, and there are thousands of cosmologists worldwide who are researching where it might have come from. But nobody is claiming that the Big Bang came from "nothing." But that doesn't mean that we don't know that it happened.

I mean, if you saw a stray cat, would you deny that it exists simply because you don't know where it came from? To deny the existence of the stray cat is no different than denying the existence of the Big Bang just because we don't know where that came from.

  • If Christ is Lord and the USA is a Christian Nation...?

...then why does the Constitution specifically forbid titles of nobility?

  • Don't you find it ironic that many Christians...?

...use computers and the internet to talk about how science is bad?

I see it on here and other forums so often, such as a moment ago when someone made the ridiculous claim that atheists worship science as a deity. Do they think that someone prayed their computer into existence or something?

  • How is QuiBids allowed to stay in business?

Seriously, isn't it blatantly obvious that they're a scam? I just saw a commercial and lost count of how many lies they told.

  • Do you worship the one true god?

    ...Talos?

Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise!

We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars!

But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, "Let me show you the power of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter. I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you." [note 1]

Aye, love. Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of Skyrim! The future of Tamriel!

And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of man! Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit!

The very idea is inconceivable to our Elven overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth!

Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives?

And what does the Empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people!

So rise up! Rise up, children of the Empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the word of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine!

For we are the children of man! And we shall inherit both the heavens and the earth! And we, not the Elves or their toadies, will rule Skyrim! Forever!

Terrible and powerful Talos! We, your unworthy servants, give praise! For only through your grace and benevolence may we truly reach enlightenment!

And deserve our praise you do, for we are one! Ere you ascended and the Eight became Nine, you walked among us, great Talos, not as god, but as man!

Trust in me, Y!A! Trust in the words of Heimskr! For I am the chosen of Talos! I alone have been anointed by the Ninth to spread his holy word!

  • I got this book here...?

...that says "the fool says in his heart, 'there is a god.'"

So, for all those Christians who like to quote Psalm 14:1 as evidence of our foolishness, why do you think we should accept the quote from your book as evidence any more than you accept the quote from mine as evidence of your foolishness?

  • When Christians say that atheists will regret not believing when we die...?

...do they realize they sound like a five-year-old child on the playground saying, "you just wait until I tell my daddy on you!"

  • Why do so many Christians persist in their willful ignorance regarding atheism?

It seems that there are some people who, no matter how often you try to educate them to the contrary, continue to insist that, say, atheists worship Satan (which is impossible since we don't believe that such an entity exists), that atheists hate God (we no more hate God than we hate Spider-Man. We simply don't believe he exists), that we would change our minds if we read the bible (most of us have, and for many of us, reading the bible was one of the reasons we became atheist in the first place), and a whole host of other things that not only are not true, but make absolutely no sense.

  • Why should we need to dear for our soul?

I hear a lot of people telling me that I should. Do you honestly believe that a loving god would put us on this earth with the intent that we should live our short lives in perpetual fear?

  • Why do I see so many Christians who positively revel at the idea of people going to hell?

You see it on here and out and about -- so many Christians not merely telling people that they're going to hell, but seeming to be genuinely delighted at the idea of someone suffering in agony for all eternity. So much for Christian love, eh?

  • Why do so many people assume that atheists who legitimately question Christianity haven't read the bible?

Do they not realize that many atheists, like me, are former Christians and know very well what the bible says? Do they not also know that atheists, as a whole, are much more familiar with the bible than Christians, as a whole, are? After all, for many of us, reading the bible is what made us atheist.

  • What is the actual mechanism by which Jesus' death absolves our sins?

Here's one for you -- what is the actual cause/effect connection between Jesus dying and sins being absolved? If God is all-powerful and he wants to forgive our sins, then why can't he just wave his hand and do so? Why would he require a sacrifice? And why would the sacrifice of Jesus in any way have any effect on whether sins are forgiven?

  • Are there any arguments against gay marriage that do not involve religion?

After all, the United States is not a theocracy. Therefore, if there is no reason other than religious belief to oppose it, then it would be unconstitutional to force the populace to abide by one particular set of religious doctrine.

And no, "they can't have children" is hardly a valid reason, unless you also believe that post-menopausal women and vasectomized men should also be forbidden from marrying.
