Is the .22mag really even better than a .22lr?

I have a 10/22 which has been getting used heavily for 10-15 years by me and i think its about time to get some thing a little bigger, i would like to use it for coyote and alot of other small game. i live in ohio so i cant hunt with a centerfire rifle or else i would go .223 without thinking twice and use my 10//22 for all small game. so is a .22 mag really worth getting? they make some pretty hot .22lr but i cant get good groups with it in my gun, any thoughts?

I was disappointed in a .22Mag. I bought a rifle for the purpose of a little more effective range then a .22LR and not as loud as a .22-250. The .22 mag uses the exact same little 40 gr bullet as the .22LR. So here is the problem. To shoot to 100 yards you better have NO WIND. I find the .22 mag to be limited not so much by power as it is limited by accuracy.

Don't think much of it for varmint hunting. I only keep the rifle cause it is an Anschutz and is gorgeous. And to 50 yards it is very accurate. But so are several .22LRs. Otherwise it would be long gone. It is the only rifle I own that does not shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards dependably. I'm just a sucker for pretty wood on a pretty gun or it would be gone long ago.

With a the right placement the 22 mag or even a 17hmr can take out a coyote. I have a 22lr and a 223, planning on getting 17hmr in next few weeks or so.

I liked Staap It's answer here. He and I seem to have congruent thoughts on the 22 winchester magnum round. Allow me to explain...

Back in my youthful daze, I used to do a variety of amateur ballistic tests in my backyard using a variety of rifle and pistol calibers, shooting through a variety of mediums. Generally, I would take thick phone books, soak them in water, and then shoot through them to observe the results of the bullets.

The 22 LR, even the hot stuff like the Stingers, would pass a few inches through the phone book material. The 22 magnum? It would penetrate at least twice as far as the 22 Stingers! Usually they went through 2 phone books and kept on traveling!

Ok, so in terms of power, the 22 magnum is indeed superior to what the 22 LR hyper-velocity ammo can achieve. But accuracy-wise? Forget it. At one time or another I have owned the following firearms chambered for 22 WMR: Marlin 25M, Winchester 9422M, Ruger 77/22M, Ruger Super Single Six and the Smith & Wesson 48. They all had one thing in common - they held a group like a shotgun when trying to shoot for accuracy.

I would would be willing to bet someone $1,000 that I could take a single shot and hit a quarter at 50 yards off of sandbags with my Ruger 77/22 in 22 LR. But with my Ruger 77/22M in 22 WMR? Forget it.

relies upon on what you'll be doing maximum , sort of "varmints", & levels predicted. you are able to plink all day w/ a, 22LR & no longer smash the monetary organization. w/ excessive pace rounds , you get slightly mor e punch at close variety for smaller sport like squirrels, crows, rabbits & chucks. the extrapersistent of the ..22MAG. is likewise a stable plinker & has greater punch. The .17HMR. has the maximum pace & attain. All very precise yet may want to no longer push them past a hundred yds. In a community the position lengthy pictures are not any longer undemanding. Varmints are not any longer plenty greater beneficial than what became pronounced & earlier to the .17 , .22LR & mag looking rounds were maximum undemanding. Have heard of farmers taking deer interior the backyard patch from the back porch w/ Mags because of the actuality of noise & is in all probability unlawful No experience w/ the .17 , yet buddies say it is a foul little around. just right regards

I use Federal .22 Mag 50gr. in my Savage model 93, and get decent groups to 100 yds with them.

Buy a new 22 lr. Mag is more powerful. 22 is fine. If it won't hold groups the barrel may be worn or you using cheap ammo
