Why do people think impeached means expelled?

For every president we have, there's always people and bumper stickers that say "Impeach ____". And you know these people think in their head that they are saying "Remove ____", but Impeach simply means to draw up official accusations, not expel. Why does has this misconception lasted so long? We even had a president who was impeached, but remained in office the full term.

Because of general ignorance and the campaign, originally against Richard Nixon, which popularised the word. As you say people thought it meant just to dismiss him but actually it would have involved a criminal court case.

For the same reason that people think 'Airforce One' applies to the plane. It doesn't. It applies to the president when he is aboard the plane. They simply don't know what impeach really means.
