What kind of medical career is right for me?

Ever since preschool it has been my dream to be a doctor. Back then I wanted to be a pediatrician. Around middle school the dream changed to brain surgeon, then plastic surgeon, the pathologist (doctor who preforms autopsies) and now a pediatrician again. I love working with kids, and think it would be amazing to work with kids, but I'm not sure. I know I don't want to be a specialty doctor like an ear nose and throat doctor, and definently not anything dental, but something better. More interesting. I don't think i could handle the pressure of being a surgeon, but its a possibility. I would love being able to actually work with people and help them solve their problems. Can you think if any medical careers that could be good for me?

For the MD specialties, you do not need to make a specialty decision until late in med school, after you rotate through all of them, so there is no need to stress on a residency. There are other careers however besides becoming a MD, that you may like more, that actually spend more time with kids. A pediatrician really does not spend a great deal of time with kids. Some of the counseling specialties, play therapy, and pediatric occupational and physical therapies may be more what you are envisioning.

It wouldn't be the worst thing to look into pediatric oncology - sometimes it can be slightly more stressful seeing children in such a state, however there is no better place to make a child smile and possibly help them more than anyone in their life.

Psychiatry is what I'm going into. Helping people work around and live with mental illness and helping them connect with other people.
