If they asked you to go to a highschool and teach a subject, which one would you teach?

If given free rein, fat chance, I'd teach about handling money. I don't think the kids learn about money enough. I'd have them start a business, keep records, make a profit. Or just plain learn to keep records of their own spending, make a budget.

Several possibilities. Maybe algebra, since I tutor it. However, there are several others I might like to see myself doing.

    1) An intro to analyzing literature, teaching such ideas as point of view, mood, & symbolism, aspects I didn't learn until college. Also, I'd teach about narrowing down the topic when writing papers on literature.

    2) I'd love to spend a couple of months teaching a unit on Jean Hegland's book, Into the Forest, with many discussion questions & student papers & presentations. I've read this book several times, & I love this book, except for the ending, which I didn't like at all.

    3) I'd like to have a chance to help with presentations & discussions during March, Women's History Month. I had a chance before to do this, but didn't feel adequate to the job. However, if I were retired, I might spend the time to really prepare.

    4) I'd like to see students interview older people, either family members or ones they met at a senior center. Maybe they'd like to make a video of the interview or just make a sound recording & write out some of the questions & answers from the recording. Some might want to get some autobiographical stories, maybe by attending some of the classes that are taught to seniors on autobiographical writing. They would just about have to be home schooled students to arrange their schedules in such a way that they could do this. Even then, they probably already have subjects that they have to master for h.s. credits, so I'm sure it isn't realistic to even think about such a thing, given the demands on their time. Dream on...

All of this is over-ambitious on my part. After all, I don't really want a second career of it, but still it's a fun fantasy that I would actually do it.

I have been a substitute teacher. I enjoyed teaching geography, and especially history. I've also done math, but, the regular math teach was really good, so, I could not match him! I also did science.

    History was the best though.

I would teach English grammar. Judging from what I read on the internet, I wonder if it is taught at all anymore.

I agree with you. I'd do that too. People just don't have a clue about money.
