If you driving your car at a steady speed with the foot of the gas are you coasting?

I sometimes try and do this and the car just slows down but if I have my foot of the gas much longer more than 5-10secs am I coasting?

No you are on the over run. Coasting is when the car is out or gear or your foot has the clutch fully down while the vehicle is moving. In the UK this is illegal as it can result in an unnoticed engine stall with loss of power steering and increased brake effort

Technically yes. Anytime the engine is not propelling the vehicle, it is in fact coasting. If you're on a downhill, it probably won't slow down.

Just taking your foot off the gas doesn't disengage the engine from the wheels though. In an automatic the only way to disengage it and actually coast is to shift in neutral, and manual is to push the clutch and/or shift in neutral.

Just taking your foot off the gas will actually cause it to deccelerate faster as the engine is now actually slowing the car.

Coasting is when the car is rolling along with the clutch down (or gearbox in neutral) and no brakes applied -

ie, nothing but momentum/gravity is controlling the speed.

No. Coasting is letting the car move without using the brakes or accelerator and the gear box in neutral.

No Mike , coasting is when the car is moving out of gear , in neutral. Some people try coasting downhill , all of them do not know how to drive.

coasting is when its out of gear or clutch fully in, but this is not a safe way to drive,

If in gear, the car is slowing down with the drag of the engine and gears

it incredibly is prohibited and hazardous! the clarification is that it incredibly is totally annoying to get a vehicle returned into equipment at velocity, the brakes can over warmth and the result's a vast pile of junk on the backside of a hill with factors of human bodies jumbled at the same time. We see adequate of those injuries because it incredibly is, so please do not do it!
