In honor of his 50th birthday today, what is your favorite Chris Chelios memory?
Kay, for me two things come to mind. The incident with Ron Hextall and the preseason game in Montreal in October 2008 where he broke his leg blocking a shot. I was at that game sitting in my office's seats at the glass in the visitors end. I always made a point of going early to see the warmup. During the warmup at one point I am standing talking to my friend with my back to the glass almost leaning against it. Chelios comes over and slams his stick up against the glass right next to my face, I must have jumped 4 feet and Chelios doubled over laughing. For the rest of the game every time he skated by returning to the bench he would acknowledge me by smiling or making as if he was going to slap the glass with his stick again.
Then he gets hurt, and I am thinking have I just witnessed his last game? Fortunately he came back after Christmas but that was pretty much the beginning of the end. It bothered me at the time, here is a guy laughing all game enjoying the game still a

For me it has to be just comiing to Detroit in general. He's the reason I started watching hockey. My favorite player ALL TIME and I just loved the way he played. I also loved his attitude.....didn't give a you know what about what people thought about him. Chicago fans booed him and he just smiled....love it.

Being that I'm now 40, I think of the dedication to fitness that he had in his career (especially in his 40's). Admirable and part jealousy given that a 60-minute gym workout tires me out!
You look at the equipment he wore (that CCM helmet with a vaneer of padding, the old caps for shoulder pads)...and in the modern game you wonder how he didn't get hurt more.
I guess I also think of the 1996 World Cup where he won gold, and the 2002 Olympics where he was part of their team that won silver.

No mention of it having to be hockey-related, so I am going to go out on a limb here, even if it is in the hockey section. ;)
My favorite memory of Chris Chelios is him having the desire to start the first Greek bobsled team w/ Laird Hamilton. That would have been cool stuff right there! A great pioneer he could have been if given the chance.

Pretty much the reason I became a defense man as a kid. Everyone else wanted to be a forward to score goals, I wanted to play D like he did
Plus he was almost an Olympian in two events: hockey and bobsled
