How can I teach my dog not to chase cars? We live in the country?

We have a big puppy. He'll be one in February. He loves to play, and he runs like the wind. A car went by and he chased it nearly to the corner a half mile away. My husband tied him to a building for punishment, (on a long lead for 20 minutes) where he began digging a hole. That's another problem.

Update:

This dog is a well loved and cared for member of our family. We have had him a month and today was the first time he had the opportunity to chase a car. He's our new baby and we will take very good care of him!!

There was a farm dog that used to chase the tractor, and the big combines, and because of it, lost an eye. What fixed it was an E-collar, it has a vibration to it (no shock) A remote comes with it. You can test it on yourself if you have any apprehension about it. It's like a cell phone on vibrate. When the dog dashes out to the street, you hit the remote for a very short time. This should stop him, then call him home. You have to remember it is a dog, not a naughty child. He has no idea why he was tied up. Many dog owners turn there dogs into neurotic messes. You discipline with calmness, and confidence, not anger or frustration. Dogs will show you who you are. They will mirror you energy. A calm submissive dog, is a dog that is balanced, and that should be the goal.

It would be easier to teach your dog to not breath, the only way is to tie him up or put him behind a fence, If he digs put up an electric dog fence, he will not get near the fence Mean????

Not compared to being crushed beneath a car's wheels.

I have never seen a car chasing dog cured, and they cause wrecks when people try not to run them over, I am 64 and seen many car chasers.

Your dog needs to be kept on a leash and walked a whole lot. He also could do with a big yard to run around in off leash. But when you are out of a yard with him, he must be on a leash for the first two years, with instructions to walk "With me," with his head up. Keep the leash short and treat him as if you are training him as a guide for the blind. When he tries to get ahead of you, don't allow him to. When he is getting his yard play, make sure you teach him to come when called. Eventually, the leash can go longer and the walks can be interrupted with some "Come" exercises.

    Lazy owner strikes

Stop letting your dog roam, simple as that. You are going to end up with a very dead dog becouse you allow it to roam and use 'I live in the country' as an excuse.

Tying the dog up teaches it nothing at all. The dog digs becouse its bored and you don't give it what it needs and leave it outside all the time. If you can't or won't give the god what ti needs in terms of exercise, won't stop leaving it outside unsupervised and won't stop tingle it roam then give it to a rescue

Members of the family are NOT left tied up or left outside in a yard

Dont run away from cars go near them. Have you husband drive his car and make your dog see through window and observe his behavior. If he gets aggressive let him know by tapping him on the neck or his collar. Correct him by making him calm. You have to be calm first to make your dog calm. Also put a collar around him and a leash when walking him at first. Take him near cars and train him.

It'll be hard to teach him not to chase cars. Instead, teach him to listen to your commands, so that you can prevent him from running, or at least stop him from getting too far away. Your dog should always be supervised when there is a possibility that he could get run over by something, so you'll always be there to shout commands. i would work on his obedience. Good Luck! =)

It might seem a little mean but a remote control shock collar really helps and after a while you won't even have to use it.
