    2x + 4 = 5x - 14

    4 = 3x - 14 (-2x)

    18 = 3x (+14)

    6 = x (divide by 3)

    1. Take 2x away from both sides. This is to get rid of 2x on the left side which also turns 5x into 3x.

    : 4 = 3x - 14

    2. Add 14 to both sides to get rid of 14 on right side. Also changes 4 to 18 (4+14)

    : 18 = 3x

    3. Divide both sides by three to leave 'x' by itself.

    : 6 = x

    **You always have to add, subtract, multiply or divide on BOTH sides.
