I have a 2003 honda civic cope 5-speed 1.7 and the shifter has some slack in it?

The shifter has some slack in it ,You can put the shifter in any gear and one you put it in the gear you can move it back and forth about 2 inch ,And i have checked the linkage at the shifter and its all good and tight and i have checked under the hood at the transmission and the cables and ball joints are good and tight , It like the shift plate ir the shift fork might have something wrong ,I have never hade one of these apart just seeing if someone could help me and tell me what i need to do to tighting up the shifter linkage at the trans shifter plate , And it does not pop out of gear its just loose thanks mark drpeppers

Update:

The cables and cable mounts are good and tight and there is no movement in them the slack is in the shift plate where the cables connect to the trans .the shift fork linkage comming out of the trans is moving, you can put it in gear and reach down there and move it by hand with it in gear with out pulling out of gear .

Update 2:

sometimes what happens is the end of the cable comes loose, and instead of operating the shift gate, the cable housing slides. i bet this is where your play is coming from without looking.

Source(s): the cable housing usually has an insulator on it, so you dont see the cable sleeve slide back and forth.
