How to make the world free of landmines?

By the way, many people don't concern themselves with the land mine issue unless their own lives become affected. One thing we all can do to help rid the world of land mines, is to raise public awareness of the problem.

Nuke the surface of the world. Since you said landmines, we can spare the oceans (though there's plenty left there, too). This will also prevent nefarious scofflaws from re-seeding old minefields.

As our friends in Afghanistan are showing, since you can basically make your own landmines if it comes down to it (and actually make them even more effective), the idea of getting rid of them is an utter fantasy.

it will take a long time. unless some of the first wold countries volunteer their time and technology.

3rd world countries work hard every day to locate and detonate landmines (since it's their country ad their limbs)

Remove them one at a time. There is no other way. Newly manufactured mines should have some kind of time limiting mechanism...after X years they should go dormant. Is there such technology? If not....let's work on that.

But seriously, how about automated robots or drones? Like one of those carpet cleaners, but it searches for mines. Hundreds of them unleashed into the wild. Aaaand.....go!

You can get as many countries as you want on-board with this... still won't stop terrorists and whatnot from using them.
