Did the rings of Saturn exist before Galileo saw them?
This is a simple exercise which questions the academia maxim that in the absence of evidence, something must be assumed not to exist until proof can be found that it does exist.
It was not until Galileo first picked up a telescope that rings around any planet were seen for the first time. By the maxim mentioned above, those rings must not have existed during the life of Copernicus or Ptolemy. This is of course ridiculous.
Christians can not prove by emperical evidence that God exists. This is not surprising since God has asked us to believe in Him through trust and faith; and trust and faith do not coexist with proof.
He who requires proof has no faith and he who has faith requres no proof.
Scripture tells us that the relationship that God wants with us is that of trust/faith and love. As such, it would be self-defeating for God to provide proof of His existence while that relationship is still being formed.
Scripture also tells us that when the age of the Church is over, God will reveal Himself and irrevocably prove to all mankind His existence. Unfortuantely, when that happens it will be too late for people to come to Him out of faith and trust. It will be much like someone saying that they are sorry for committing a crime after they have been caught (would they have been sorry if they had not been caught?).
So the big question is this:
Knowing that once proof of God's existence is given then it is too late to turn to God, and knowing that the penalty for rejecting God is eternal damnation, wouldn't it be wiser to investigate carefully for yourself rather than summarily reject because of a lack of proof at this time?
Wouldn't you say that the potential negative outcome warrants a deeper investigation?
If you open your heart and mind to the Word of God, and still decide to reject it, then it is your decision and your fate. But to reject God because you fall back on an acacemic proverb or wise crack that can easily be shown to be a non-sequitur is the path of a great fool.
@Kelly Yes, I most certianly saw the irony of this specific example. What the church did to Galileo was wrong then and it would still be wrong now, but keep in mind that what the church did then was based on politics and not based on scripture. That is why Martin Luther started the reformation. Most of the Protestant denominations see scripture as the only authority (as opposed to the Pope). The point is that no matter what anyone believed at that time, those rings existed whether provable or not. The idea that just because something can not be proven, that it therefore does not exist is what we are discussing.
@Nacirema It is true my perspective is from a Christian standpoint but to think I have dismissed the other religions is unfounded. The crux of this discussion is about dismissing that which has not yet been proven. That can be applied to those other 2999 religions as well.
@Darq Instead of ranting, would you like to try to actually address the point of the discussion
@JamesK Your answer is silly because you obviously didn't actually read the post since you failed to grasp what it was about.
@OSTCarmine Your assertion that something unproven is inconsequential is laughable. That is saying that before the discovery of microbiology, viruses were inconsequential. If that was so, people would not have gotten sick and died. You really need to rethink that opinion.

Of course.
You're failing to see the irony of what you just posted. The rings existed, but Galileo needed proof of them (the telescope) before he could convince anyone else that they existed. But even with visible proof, the man was still persecuted by the religious for his findings.

First of all you are only talking about the Christian god.
Most people on earth (or that have ever lived) are not Christian and do not subscribe to your brand of superstition. What if you are wrong in your assumption that the judeo-christian god is real?
Also, you are using arguments from a book, which by atheist reasoning is a work of fiction, so no matter how many references you use from a work of fiction it does not prove anything in reality.
So, if you are attempting to make an objective point (as "mt75689" said atheists are incapable of doing), then maybe you should actually be objective in your reasoning.

you do no longer % an noticeably extreme-powered telescope to make certain the jewellery. yet, you do % a fortunate time while the jewellery are tilted purely so. I particularly have used a 10-inch reflective telescope. uncertain what magnification it became yet a million/2 the moon crammed the optic. Jupiter gave the look of relating to the dimensions of one / 4 and Saturn gave the look of relating to the dimensions of an erasure on the tip of a pencil, and, i could desire to make certain the jewellery. the element that I bear in mind maximum became how in a well timed fashion all of the heavenly our bodies moved outdoors the viewing attitude of the telescope lens.

Do you remember the story of Kwan Yin, the Chinese goddess who refused to leave the world until every single soul had achieved Enlightenment?
I think of God that way, that He will not leave any of His precious children behind, even if they are currently in the darkness of ignorance. Even if it took a million years, the slow unwinding of mistaken thought patterns and silly desires can proceed for all souls, and they can ultimately be reunited with Him.
For this reason I don't envision any situation where it is "too late" to come to that Great Understanding.
Much of what you said is very true and well written, and my only difference in opinion is that there can be a time limit on the wisdom and mercy of God.

Of course if convincing evidence of God (I assume you're referring to the Abrahamic God?) showed up and slapped every scientist in the face, it would be undeniably perverse to reject it.
The thing is, your explicit assumption is buttressed by a predisposition towards Christian faith. You knowingly dismiss the existence of approximately 2,999 other deities which could be responsible for the creation of existence as we know it.

the rings existed before gallileo discovered them. if he had not discovered them they would still exist. if god is out there, then he exists, whether we can ever find him or not.
that being said, up until the point that those rings were discovered they were inconsequential in any argument. same thing with god. until we can prove him, he dooes not matter, neither does jesus, neither does the bible

Yours is a silly question. Obviously, the rings would have to have been there before he saw them, because he saw the light reflected from them long before. I do not know how many light-minutes Saturn was away from Earth at the time he looked (consider orbital positions) but obviously it had to be before.

Great stuff, but you're expecting a lot from atheists. It's biologically impossible for them to think objectively. They can only make the false claim that they do.
