What do you think "Speaking In Tongues" means?

I know what it means and I know that a lot of people are confused or completely wrong when it comes to what it means. So what do you think it means?

It was a gift originally given to Jesus Apostles, so that the Good News about him could be spread quickly. ... They were given the ability to speaking languages other than their own. ... Those were KNOWN languages, not some gibberish that no one else could understand.

It's actually a gift of the Holy Spirit so it's supernatural. What happens when someone speaks in tongues if they are really doing it and not preforming a hoax that individual wouldn't even be aware that they are speaking in different languages to them they it would seen like they are speaking their native language but others will understand them in their native languages so they would be aware of that individual speaking in their language even though the individual is unaware they are doing this in fact in most cases the individual may have never had learned that language in which the other person understands them. It would be like the person that is speaking in tongues would say to another person in their native language, "Good day", but if that other person was let's say German it would be, "Guten tag" even though the person speaking in tongues never learned German. And it goes both ways the German can say something in German like, "Ve gates?", and to the person speaking in tongues it would sound to them like "How are you?" in their native language. And if you were to put them into a room with many people that speak different languages when the person who speaks in tongues says anything all of those people would understand them in their own native language and when any of them were to say something the person speaking in tongues would understand them in their native language but between the other people they would all be speaking in foreign languages and wouldn't be able to understand each other unless they had already known how to speak those languages.

There are actually some cults out there that will baptize by the Holy Spirit and the individual will begin to speak gibberish now there is a good chance that individual would say some words in another language(s) because every language has common words and of course the individual that is doing this is well aware of the gibberish they are speaking in.

A special ability given through the holy spirit to some disciples in the early Christian congregation that enabled them to preach or otherwise glorify God in a language other than their own.

This privilege was not extended to every christian. "Not all have gifts of healings, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all are translators, are they" ( 1 Corinthians 12:30)

In the first century, when Christians ‘spoke in tongues,’ what they said had meaning to people who knew those languages. (Acts 2:4, 8) Today, is it not true that ‘speaking in tongues’ usually involves an ecstatic outburst of unintelligible sounds?

The word 'unknown' is italicized in the King James Version...... therefore It is not in the original text.....tongues were different languages........not gibberish people could not understand.......tongues were used once in that period for proving the ministry of Jesus Christ......now with the book of revelations...we do not have any more need of it.....can you add to what Jesus has already spoken?

It is ridiculous, to try to make tongues speaking the primary evidence of Holy Spirit filling. A survey of Acts shows the following evidences present when believers were filled with the Spirit: Preaching in foreign languages (Ac. 2:4-11). Witnessing of Christ with boldness (Ac. 4:8-12,31-33). Willingness to serve God's people (Ac. 6:3-5). Christ-like attitude toward's one's enemies (Ac. 7:55-60). Readiness to obey God (Ac. 9:17-20). Winning men to Christ (Ac. 11:24). Resisting false teachers (Ac. 13:8-10). Joy in the Lord (Ac. 13:52).

The evidence of the filling of the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 5-6 does not mention tongues at all. The marks of Spirit filling are said to be spiritual relationships (Ep. 5:19,21-33; 6:1-9), worship (Ep. 5:19), resisting Satan (Ep. 6:11-18), and an effective prayer life (Ep. 5:18-20).

God always defines terms He uses.

In Acts 2, tongues are defined as known earthly languages in which the apostles had never studied but could speak fluently, not a godly gibberish.

I think of it as a way for you to speak out loud glorifying God and that those who will hear and understand it will be touched by it. But when people speak in tongues around me I don't understand exactly what they say, but that it is good.

I am trying to be open minded about it.

I think it would be fascinating to take recordings of people having a religious experience, mental patients spouting gibberish, and computer-generated random sounds, and see if people who believe it to be inspired by something supernatural, to tell the difference.
