On a human target, if the desired result is to "kill" and not "stop" (there is a big difference) the target is a bit bigger than a golf ball in the center of the forehead.

That, and you're talking about a MOVIE.

The Army's IOTV has been known to stop the 7.62x54mm bullet fired by the SVD from less than 100 yards away... by the time you factor in the massive loss in velocity experienced over the course of a mile, a .50BMG could very well lack the power to penetrate a decent vest.

However, a real sniper simply wouldn't take a shot that risky. Unless given no other choice, they would always aim for the center of mass, which would be much easier to hit (pretty relative terminology at that distance).

Also, in that movie, the "body armor" statement was irrelevant because the shooter didn't shoot the president at all- they shot the bishop (or whatever he was), and they used a .408 CheyTac for it, which travels at a higher velocity.

From 1.5 miles away, the .50 BMG still has the velocity of a .44 magnum 6 inches from a target. The .50 is an extremely powerful round that remains lethal at very long ranges, and will most certainly defeat body armor even at said ranges.

Hollywood is a piss-poor source for education about real-world firearms. You will soon find that the more you learn about guns, the less you will like Hollywood's portrayal of them. Californians don't know **** because they live in a totalitarian state where defending yourself is a privilege.

A Mile and a half is unrealistic to begin with, it's just never going to happen at that Range using a 50 caliber for an assassination on a President.*...

Because it was a movie catering to the uneducated youth, so the public knows the term .50 to be = bad-***. Especially to the punks who probably saw the movie and said " oh sh*t he's gonna use a 50, duuudde that's awesome, 50's are awesome, dude, awesome, dude" To the gun community 50's are awesome, but honestly a friend of mine owns one, the Bohica upper for the AR and it wasn't all that much fun. Although the round itself is impressive.

Source(s): Tired of this "zombie" bullshit and the whole "vampire" fad and all that jazz. Although it sells, it's not for me and at this point it's annoying; so this was my bitter rant. I know the question wasn't zombie related, but the people in my answer are, you know what I'm talkin about. The kids you probably don't want your daughter dating.

First off, hitting any targer over a mile starts to get hard. And because the velocity of the round has slowed by the time it reaches the president so it's momentum to get through the vest would be decreased, that is why you go for the head

im going to say yes, or at least the impact alone would kill him, thats a heavy bullet and the shock alone would be pretty crazy, but its an impossible shot anyway which makes the movie pretty fake. if you look at all the longest confirmed kills ever pretty much all of them were not made on the first shot the shooter took.

Between the slower momentum, the armor, and the more venerable head I'm going for vunrable. Remember though it's a movie. At that type of distance you have to be good to shoot anybodies head.

ha why would they use .50 bmg? better to use a smaller caliber if your not taking down armored vehicles if you ask me.
