How to make garden more fertile?

last year i had 6 roses several tomato plants and wild grass and flowers in my garden. This year i have one tomato plant and 1 rose plant because gophers ate everything else and gardeners sprayed weed killer. I want to start my garden again but am worried about planting when not even grass or weeds are growing

In many areas free horse and or cow manure is available for the taking, or for a nominal fee delivered (usually a very BIG load, be warned). Make sure to get it already composted (no big "apples" in the horse stuff for instance). Goat or rabbit manure is even better if available. Look on google for horse or cow farms, riding stables, or google "manure". I found mine on Craigs list the first time. Using a mixture of different natural ingredients is always better than using just one type. Also start your own compost pile or bin - a trash can with holes in the sides and the bottom cut out will work if you don't want to purchase one (they are not expensive if you stick to basic models). Toss all your vegetable waste, coffee grounds, clean plant trimmings in, keep slightly damp and turn as frequently as you can and you'll eventually have the best soil possible.

It sounds as if spray drifted on to your patch from neighbouring gardens. Unless I misunderstood you need to have a word with them. There are certain sprays that you can plant proper plants after waiting six weeks they need to use something a bit more environmentally friendly

Start composting your own vegetable waste etc including used coffee grounds and tealeaves. Perhaps you could grow tomato plants in tubs in grobag compost and have netting round them. Sorry I do not know anything about gophers I am going to look them up now out of curiosity.

Here are some organic ingredients to grow a healthy garden. Use compost like mentioned by everyone: cracked egg shells, spray with neem oil, etc.

I would also put fertilizer into your tomato and roses. It would give an extra kick.

Compost. Animal waste doesn't smell nice but it does the job. We have dogs and even though we clear our garden of their waste you can tell where they do the toilet because the grass is much longer and grows a lot faster than anywhere else.

compost, compost, compost, and more compost. If your soil is happy then all that grows there will be too. As for the gophers, ask at your local garden center about what works around there.

Chicken manure. Its cheap, easy to use (its in pellet form) and keeps well. Plus you can use it all over your garden, including over vegetable plots.
